NDC Youth in Tamale Reject Anthony Sarpongโs Appointment as Acting GRA Commissioner-General
The appointment of Anthony Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) by President John Dramani Mahama has sparked strong opposition from some concerned National Democratic Congress (NDC) youth groups in Tamale.
Opposition to Appointment
At a press conference led by Abu Jamal, Coordinator of the Concerned Youth of NDC, the group expressed their dissatisfaction, labeling Mr. Sarpongโs appointment as “inappropriate” and questioning his ability to lead Ghanaโs revenue mobilization efforts.
Allegations of Political Bias
The youth group accused Anthony Sarpong of being aligned with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). They highlighted his previous role as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG) board in 2020 under the former NPP administration, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
โWe do not see him as someone capable of leading a robust revenue generation drive due to his affiliation with the NPP. Ghanaโs wealth is at risk under his leadership,โ Abu Jamal stated.
Call for Revocation
The group has called on President Mahama to revoke Mr. Sarpongโs appointment within five working days and to select a credible candidate from within the NDC who can effectively manage the GRA.
โThe NDC has capable individuals who can manage key institutions like the GRA with excellence. We urge the president to reconsider this decision,โ Abu Jamal added.
Threat of Protest
The youth group has vowed to stage mass protests if their demands are not met. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring that appointments reflect the expertise and loyalty of NDC members.
Concerns Over Ghanaโs Revenue Mobilization
The group stressed the importance of strong and transparent leadership at the GRA, particularly during a time when efficient revenue collection is critical for national development.
Whatโs Next?
President Mahama has yet to respond to the groupโs concerns, but the rising tension highlights the internal challenges within the NDC over key appointments.
