The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released all withheld 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, putting an end to weeks of uncertainty for thousands of students.
Earlier, WAEC withheld over 10,000 results due to suspected examination malpractices. However, following legal action and intense pressure from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), the council pledged to release the results by February 28, 2024โa commitment they have now fulfilled.
Why Were the Results Withheld?
WAEC initially flagged the results due to concerns over exam irregularities. The council has been actively cracking down on malpractice in recent years, implementing strict security measures to uphold the credibility of the WASSCE.

Legal Battle and Student Protests
The issue escalated when affected students and advocacy groups, particularly NUGS, threatened nationwide protests if the results were not released promptly. The legal tussle further complicated the situation, forcing WAEC to respond.
Speaking to Channel One News, John Kapi, WAECโs Head of Public Affairs, confirmed that all withheld resultsโ including those involved in the legal caseโare now accessible.
โAs we promised, we kept to our word. By the close of February 28, we had uploaded all the results of the candidates whose results had been withheld. The court had ordered the release of these results, and we have complied. There are no outstanding results related to this matter.โ
Whatโs Next for Candidates?
With the results now available, candidates can check their scores via the WAEC results portal. However, WAEC anticipates that some students may lodge complaints regarding discrepancies or grading concerns in the coming days.
โSince the results were released on a Friday, we expect candidates to start reaching out this week with concerns. However, what we have published is a true reflection of their performance,โ Kapi added.
Final Thoughts
The release of these withheld results marks the end of a stressful period for affected students. However, it also highlights the need for transparency and efficiency in handling examination disputes.
