Mahama Reaffirms Commitment to Free SHS Programme
President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his dedication to improving the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program, promising to address its challenges and enhance educational outcomes. Speaking during his โThank You Tourโ of the Central Region on February 6, 2025, Mahama emphasized that education remains one of his top priorities.
He outlined plans to strengthen the Free SHS program by securing dedicated funding and decentralizing food procurement to ensure smoother operations. โEducation will remain a priority, and we will work to provide the best possible learning environment for our children at all levels,โ Mahama stated.

Plans to Decentralize Food Procurement and Secure Funding
Mahama highlighted the need for dedicated funding to sustain the Free SHS program and improve its efficiency. He also proposed decentralizing food procurement to address logistical challenges and ensure the timely delivery of meals to students.
โWe plan to improve the Free SHS program by securing dedicated funding and decentralizing food procurement,โ he said. These measures aim to create a more sustainable and effective system for delivering quality education to Ghanaian students.
Introduction of โNo Academic Feesโ Policy for Tertiary Students
In addition to improving Free SHS, Mahama announced the introduction of a โno academic feesโ policy to provide financial aid for continuing students in tertiary institutions. This policy aims to reduce the financial burden on families and ensure more students can access higher education.
โWe will introduce a โno academic feesโ policy offering financial aid to continuing students,โ Mahama declared. He also pledged to expand infrastructure in tertiary institutions to accommodate the growing number of students.
Focus on Equipping Youth for the Global Economy
Mahama emphasized the importance of equipping Ghanaian youth with the skills needed to compete in the global economy. By improving the Free SHS program, expanding access to tertiary education, and investing in infrastructure, his administration aims to create a more robust educational system that prepares students for future challenges.
