NPP Blames Spiritual Influence for Defeat in December 2024 Elections
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has attributed its surprising defeat in the December 2024 general elections to what it describes as a spiritual influence, citing inexplicable occurrences on election day. Party General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, shared his belief that the low voter turnout among NPP supporters could not be explained by ordinary political factors.
In an interview with Ashh FM, excerpts of which were shared by Facebook user Yaw Koshievi, Mr. Kodua expressed his concerns over what seemed like an “agreement” among NPP supporters not to vote. He emphasized that in all sixteen regions, voter participation from NPP members was abnormally low, a scenario he deemed highly unusual and not explainable through regular political means.
Spiritual Influence and Internal Tensions
The NPP General Secretary also noted the withdrawal of spiritual support, particularly from pastors and religious leaders, who traditionally intercede on behalf of the party. Kodua suggested that internal tensions and anger within the party had caused some influential spiritual figures to withhold their support, which, in his view, contributed to the party’s poor performance at the polls.
โI appeal to the pastors who intercede for us,โ Kodua remarked. โA lot of spiritual machinations occurred ahead of the 2024 elections. Things took place in the spiritual realm, which I believe influenced the outcome.โ
Prophetic Warnings and Election Outcome
Notably, Rev. Owusu Bempah, a prominent pastor and former NPP supporter, had predicted that the party would suffer a major defeat. His prophecy, which suggested that spiritual forces would play a significant role in the election results, seemed to come true as John Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, won with 6,328,397 votes (56.55%).
A Deeper Look at the NPP’s Defeat
While the NPP has attributed its loss to spiritual factors, it remains to be seen whether these explanations will gain traction with the partyโs supporters or be viewed as an attempt to deflect from political and organizational shortcomings.
Conclusion
The NPP’s claims about spiritual influences bring a new layer to the discourse surrounding Ghana’s December 2024 elections. While the party points to these unseen forces as factors that contributed to its loss, it also raises questions about how internal party dynamics and external influences, both political and spiritual, may have played a role in shaping the election’s outcome
