NPP Blames NDC and President Mahama for Fatal Clashes at AngloGold Ashanti Mines
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President John Dramani Mahama of negligence, which they claim directly contributed to the tragic deaths of at least eleven people in violent clashes at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) mines in Obuasi and Newmont.
At a press conference in Accra, Richard Ahiagbah, NPP Director of Communication, condemned the violence and lawlessness following the December 7th, 2024 general elections, which saw the NDC emerge victorious.
NPP Accuses NDC of Failing to Control Supporters
The NPP emphasized that despite their peaceful concession of defeat, President Mahama and the NDC leadership failed to take action to control their supporters, who allegedly launched a violent campaign targeting government institutions, security installations, and private businesses.
โThe NDC and its grassroots have ignored repeated calls to stop the violence. Instead, the attacks intensified, as if they had seized power through a coup,โ the NPP stated.
Violent Attacks by NDC Supporters
The NPP listed several incidents where they claim NDC supporters wreaked havoc on state institutions:
- New Juaben South Municipal Assembly โ vandalized by NDC youth
- Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) โ stormed and employees forcibly removed
- COCOBOD and the Ministry of Energy โ attacked and ransacked
- Police stations in Ejura and Attebubu โ set on fire
- NHIA, NSS, School Feeding Secretariat, TVET, and National Lottery Authority offices in the Eastern Region โ forcibly taken over
The NPP argues that the deaths of NDC members in Obuasi were a direct result of the partyโs failure to control its supporters.
Silence and Inaction from President Mahama
โThe silence of President John Mahama and the NDC leadership emboldened these violent acts. Had they cautioned their members, the bloodshed in Obuasi could have been avoided,โ the NPP claimed.
While the NDC leadership issued weak condemnations of the violence, the NPP insists their inaction fueled continued unrest.
NPP Calls for Justice
The NPP has called for a full investigation into the deaths in Obuasi and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice. They also warned the Ghana Police Service not to engage in any โbackroom dealsโ with the Mahama administration to shield perpetrators.
โWe urge President Mahama to ensure justice is served and not protect any of the individuals involved in these acts of violence,โ the NPP emphasized
