Mussa Dankwa Cautions Mahama on IGPโs Removal
Renowned pollster and lead researcher at Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwa, has urged former President John Mahama to reconsider any plans to remove the current Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, if he returns to power.
According to Dankwa, Dampareโs leadership has set him apart as one of Ghanaโs most respected security chiefs in recent history. He warned that replacing him could disrupt the progress made in law enforcement under his tenure.
IGP Dampareโs Strong Leadership Record
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Dankwa highlighted the publicโs trust in Dr. Dampare, emphasizing that his leadership has brought significant reforms and stability to the Ghana Police Service.
โThe IGP is the most popular security chief weโve had in recent times. If I were the president, I wouldnโt remove him,โ Dankwa wrote.
His remarks come amidst speculation that a potential Mahama-led government might dismiss security heads, including Dr. Dampare, following the 2024 general elections.
Call for Supreme Court to Expedite Security Head Case
Dankwa also criticized the Supreme Court for delaying its ruling on the ongoing case regarding the removal of security heads by an incoming president. He argued that resolving this legal matter before the elections would provide much-needed clarity on the tenure of top security officials.
โThe Supreme Court must prioritize this case. The uncertainty over whether a new government can remove security heads needs to be addressed before the elections. Justice delayed is justice denied,โ he stated.
He further questioned why the court had not treated the issue with urgency, given its potential implications on national security.
Political and Civil Society Concerns
Dankwaโs concerns echo those of Imani Ghana, a policy think tank, which has also raised alarm over reports that the government may seek to replace Dr. Dampare. Many security experts argue that continuity in leadership is essential for stability, particularly as Ghana approaches a crucial election period
