Muntaka Praises Ghana Police for Non-Violent Approach During 2024 Elections
Interior Minister-designate Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has applauded the Ghana Police Service for their professional and strategic handling of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, emphasizing their decision to avoid using firearms despite provocations.
Police Commended for Restraint and Strategic Action
Speaking during his vetting before Parliamentโs Appointments Committee on Friday, January 24, Muntaka highlighted how the policeโs approach played a critical role in defusing tensions at polling centers.
โThe refusal of the police to use firearms, despite provocations, helped prevent unnecessary escalation during the elections,โ he stated.
He added that the policeโs strategy of recording incidents and prosecuting individuals responsible for misconduct showcases a commitment to justice and accountability.
Supporting Accountability and Prosecutions
Muntaka expressed his intention to back the policeโs ongoing efforts to prosecute offenders from the elections.
โIf given the nod, I will support the police in prosecuting any wrongdoer. Their refusal to use firearms is why no deaths have been attributed to the police during the elections,โ he noted.
He contrasted this with incidents involving the military, pointing out that recorded shootings were linked to army personnel rather than the police.
Praise for the National Election Security Task Force
Muntaka also commended the National Election Security Task Force for its overall performance during the elections, describing their efforts as instrumental in maintaining peace and order.
This recognition underscores the importance of security agencies in safeguarding Ghanaโs democratic processes and fostering public trust in law enforcement.
