Gregory Afokoโs Third Bail Application in Nine Years
Gregory Afoko, accused of conspiring with Asabke Alangdi to murder former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Chairman Adams Mahama, has filed a bail application for the third time in nine years. The application, submitted on February 17, 2025, will be heard on February 21 by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons.
The case has been adjourned to March 5, 2025, due to an improperly constituted jury panel, further prolonging the legal proceedings.
Background of the Case
In April 2024, a seven-member jury found Asabke Alangdi guilty of conspiring with Gregory Afoko to kill Adams Mahama in 2015. However, the jury returned a 4-3 verdict of not guilty for Afoko on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder. Alangdi was sentenced to death for conspiracy, while Afoko was acquitted of murder charges. Alangdi has since appealed the verdict.

The Alleged Crime: A Timeline of Events
The prosecution outlined that on May 14, 2015, Gregoryโs brother, Paul Afoko, and Kwabena Agyepong, then NPP National Chairman and General Secretary, arrived in Bolgatanga for a meeting. Adams Mahama allegedly organized thugs to disrupt the meeting, leading to a confrontation.
On May 20, 2015, Gregory and Asabke allegedly ambushed Mahama at his residence, pouring a substance suspected to be acid on him. Mahama sustained severe burns and died while being airlifted to Accra for treatment. His wife also suffered burns while assisting him.
