Gold Discovery in Upper East: A Game Changer for the Region
Gold Discovery in Upper East: A New Era of Economic Growth
The Upper East Region of Ghana has recently uncovered significant gold deposits across multiple districts, presenting a massive opportunity for economic transformation. This discovery, which spans seven out of the region’s 15 District Assemblies and Municipalities, has sparked discussions on infrastructure development, particularly the proposed Bolgatanga Airport.
Gold Deposits Found in Seven Districts
During an interaction with journalists at the proposed Bolgatanga Airport site on Saturday, March 29, Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga confirmed the discovery. He emphasized that the presence of gold deposits in nearly half of the region’s districts signifies a major shift in economic prospects.
“This region, all of a sudden, we have discovered minerals around. Out of the 15 municipal district assemblies, we have about seven of them that have this deposit. And if they are having this deposit, it means that there’s business to do,” he stated.

The Need for Infrastructure Development
Minister Atanga highlighted the urgent need for an airport in the region, stating that efficient transportation is crucial for miners and gold buyers. The Bolgatanga Airport project is seen as a key solution to facilitating trade and ensuring secure gold transportation.
“When they do the mining, they will need faster means to send their gold to the national level without being disturbed by armed robberies. There’s a need for us to quicken things to improve upon things.”
