The Ghana Black Stars’ hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco were crushed after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Angola on Friday. Despite an outstanding free kick from Jordan Ayew that initially gave Ghana the lead, Angola, the stronger side, equalized and ended Ghana’s chances for the tournament.
Ayew’s spectacular free kick in the 18th minute provided a much-needed boost for the team, especially after a series of lacklustre performances in their previous four matches. Ghana maintained their lead with solid defence, and goalkeeper Manaf Nurudeen made a crucial penalty save to keep the score at halftime.
However, in the second half, Angola’s dominance paid off when Zini, a substitute who went unnoticed in the box, headed in the equalizer, sealing Ghana’s fate. This draw means Ghana will miss the AFCON tournament for the first time since 2004, a significant setback for the national team.
Sudan remains a serious contender for qualification, needing just a point in their final match to advance alongside Angola, who have already qualified. Additionally, if Niger defeats Ghana while Sudan loses, Niger could also secure a spot.
Ghana’s final match against Niger, which now holds little significance for the Black Stars, will take place on Monday at the Accra Sports Stadium, marking the end of a disappointing qualifying campaign.
