Residents Call for Urgent Action Against Roaming Cattle in Accra
Residents in various parts of Accra are calling on local authorities to take immediate action against herdsmen who allow their cattle to roam freely in the city. The unregulated movement of livestock is creating severe sanitation problems, obstructing traffic, and disrupting everyday life for many citizens.
Stray Cattle Causing Traffic and Sanitation Issues
During a visit to Dansoman, several cows were spotted loitering in the streets without supervision. The presence of these animals not only obstructs vehicular movement but also poses significant safety hazards to pedestrians and motorists alike.
Residents voiced their frustrations to Channel One News, demanding stricter enforcement of city by-laws to prevent further disruptions.
“They are always on the road every morning. One day, they invaded my house and left a mess. They are also causing heavy traffic,” complained Akua Nyarko, a resident of Dansoman Tunga.
Residents Share Disturbing Encounters with Stray Cattle
Beyond traffic congestion, stray cattle have led to alarming incidents within residential areas.
“These animals make life unbearable for us. Just the other day, they knocked over our soup and ate our yams. They even relieve themselves here,” lamented Akosua Agyekum, another resident.
The fear of aggressive behavior from the cattle is also a pressing concern for many.
“They roam around all the time. When we complain, their herdsmen get angry. One of the cattle charged at me, and I had to run back into my house. It’s terrifying. If one of these animals injures someone, all the herdsman will say is ‘sorry,’” recounted Akua Asante from Dansoman.
Calls for Stricter Enforcement of City By-Laws
Residents are urging city authorities to take immediate action to regulate and manage stray cattle within Accra. They emphasize the need for:
- Strict enforcement of by-laws to prevent herdsmen from allowing their livestock to roam freely.
- Designated grazing zones outside urban areas to keep cattle from interfering with city life.
- Fines and penalties for herdsmen who violate regulations.
What Can Be Done?
City authorities must act swiftly to address this growing concern. Public safety, sanitation, and urban order should remain top priorities. Stricter laws, increased monitoring, and penalties for non-compliance could help resolve the issue.
