President Mahama Urges Justice and Compensation for Victims of Election Violence
President John Dramani Mahama has urged Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the Minister-designate for the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, to prioritize ensuring justice and fair compensation for the families of those who tragically lost their lives during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. This directive comes as part of a broader effort to address the repercussions of election-related violence and promote accountability.
President Calls for Fair Compensation for Victims’ Families
Speaking at a special National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on January 10, 2025, President Mahama acknowledged the profound grief of affected families. He emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring justice and reparation, stating:
“We would also ask the Attorney General, when he takes office, to determine a fair and adequate compensation for the families of those who have lost their lives.”
The President highlighted that this effort is essential to supporting grieving families and rebuilding public trust in the country’s democratic processes.
Directive to the Inspector General of Police
President Mahama also reiterated his instruction to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to ensure comprehensive investigations into the election-related killings. He stressed the importance of identifying and prosecuting those responsible to uphold the rule of law and deter future acts of violence.
Vetting of Ministerial Nominees Scheduled
Dr Dominic Ayine, who has been nominated for the key role of Attorney General and Minister of Justice, is set to appear before the Appointments Committee on January 13, 2025, alongside two other ministerial nominees.
