Clerk of Parliament Urges Incoming MPs to Prioritize National Interest Over Partisan Agendas
The Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, has called on members of Ghana’s incoming 9th Parliament to focus on their constitutional duties and prioritize the needs of their constituents over partisan interests. His appeal comes as the 8th Parliament prepares to dissolve on Monday, January 6, 2025, making way for the swearing-in of the 9th Parliament ahead of the Presidential inauguration.
A Call to Serve Constituents with Integrity
In an interview with Citi News, Mr Djietror stressed that Members of Parliament (MPs) have a profound responsibility to address the challenges and aspirations of the people they represent. He urged the incoming MPs to let their parliamentary work reflect the collective interests of Ghanaians, transcending political affiliations.
“Members of Parliament-elect must apprise themselves of their roles. Parliament is not a space to reinforce party positions or to serve partisan interests,” he stated.
He further highlighted the importance of aligning parliamentary actions with the national development agenda, emphasizing that MPs must approach their duties with integrity, accountability, and dedication.
Parliament as a Driver of National Development
The Clerk reminded MPs that Parliament plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the nation. He encouraged them to view their position as a platform for advancing policies that contribute to Ghana’s progress, underscoring that political parties are elected to power based on manifestos designed to promote national development.
“The policies outlined in party manifestos should aim to advance the country’s growth, not personal or party gains,” Mr. Djietror added.
Transition to the 9th Parliament
As the 8th Parliament concludes its term, the spotlight shifts to the incoming MPs, who will be sworn in on the evening of January 6. The new Parliament is expected to tackle pressing issues such as economic recovery, healthcare reforms, and addressing inequalities across various sectors.
A Nation Watching Closely
The Clerk’s message serves as a timely reminder of the expectations placed on the 9th Parliament. Ghanaians will closely monitor their representatives, hoping for leadership that prioritizes unity, transparency, and meaningful progress.
