Ato Forson Blasts Akufo-Addo Administration Over Economic Misrepresentation
Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has sharply criticized the previous administration under President Nana Akufo-Addo, alleging that it misrepresented the true state of Ghana’s economy. He asserts that the economic policies implemented did not align with claims that the country had “turned the corner.”
Dr. Forson argued that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government failed to provide Ghanaians with an honest assessment of the country’s economic difficulties.
“I had always maintained that the government of the day at the time had failed to paint the true state of the Ghanaian economy. If you look at the economic policies, they don’t reflect an economy that has turned the corner.”

Economic Crisis and the Need for Transparency
Dr. Forson stressed that the Akufo-Addo-led administration did not properly inform Ghanaians about the magnitude of the economic crisis. He believes that failure to acknowledge the severity of the situation contributed to ineffective policy prescriptions that worsened Ghana’s financial state.
“The political class at that time was failing to tell citizens the magnitude of the economic problem we were facing. Clearly, we were not getting the right prescriptions to take us out of the mess. No wonder we are seeing what we are seeing now.”
The Finance Minister highlighted the economic burdens inherited by the new administration and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and economic recovery
The Reality of Ghana’s Economic Struggles
Ghana’s economy has faced significant challenges in recent years, including:
- Rising inflation and currency depreciation
- High debt levels and debt servicing pressures
- Job losses and economic slowdown
- Increased cost of living impacting ordinary citizens
Despite previous claims by Akufo-Addo’s administration that the economy had stabilized, economic indicators suggested otherwise. The new government has vowed to implement more transparent and effective policies to drive economic recovery.
A Call for Accountability and Real Solutions
Dr. Forson emphasized the need for honest governance and real solutions rather than political rhetoric. He assured Ghanaians that the current administration is focused on creating sustainable economic policies that reflect the true state of the economy.
“That is what we’ve inherited, and we have a responsibility to fix it.”
As Ghana navigates this challenging economic period, many citizens will watch closely how the current government addresses these pressing financial issues.
