Amidu Urges President Mahama to Hold Perpetrators of Ken Ofori-Atta’s Residence Invasion Accountable
Amidu Calls for Accountability in Ofori-Atta Residence Raid
Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has publicly urged President John Dramani Mahama to hold those responsible for the invasion of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s residence accountable. Amidu emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all individuals involved in the raid face legal consequences.
In a statement issued on February 14, Amidu stressed that Ghana must move forward, not backward, and that the electorate did not vote for media tactics to distract from what he described as “unlawful acts” by government agents.
The Raid on Ken Ofori-Atta’s Residence
On February 11, 2025, a group of individuals, including some in military and police uniforms, raided Ofori-Atta’s residence in Cantonments while he was out of the country. His wife and other family members were present during the incident. Approximately 12 individuals—five in military uniforms, one in a police uniform, and the rest in plain clothes—carried out the operation.
Ofori-Atta has been in the U.S. on medical grounds since the beginning of 2025, after notifying both the former and current Chief of Staff, Frema Osei-Opare and Julius Debrah. Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng later claimed the raid was staged and declared Ofori-Atta wanted in connection with corruption-related offenses.
Amidu’s Statement: A Call for Justice
In his statement, Amidu questioned the motives behind the raid and called for a thorough and impartial investigation. He highlighted the involvement of Richard Jakpa, whose appeal was pending in the Supreme Court at the time of the raid. Amidu argued that the withdrawal of Jakpa’s case by the Attorney-General raised concerns about political interference and the rule of law.
Amidu wrote, “The President needs to walk his talk by ensuring that all those involved in this despicable invasion and other invasions of citizens’ rights and freedoms are brought to trial before the ordinary courts by the due process of law.”
The Need for Impartial Investigations
Amidu emphasized the importance of an independent investigation to uncover the truth behind the raid. He questioned whether the invasion was linked to the declaration of Ofori-Atta as a fugitive by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
“The nation has a right to know the motive and the reasons for the Rambo-style invasion of the former Minister’s home in his absence under the watch of the President as the Chairman of the National Security Council,” Amidu stated.
The Role of the Attorney-General and Rule of Law
Amidu also criticized the Attorney-General’s handling of the case, arguing that the withdrawal of Jakpa’s appeal raised questions about the integrity of the legal process. He called on President Mahama to ensure that the Attorney-General’s prosecutorial powers are exercised impartially and without political influence.
“Experience and not missing dockets from the Attorney-General’s Office counts!” Amidu asserted, drawing on his decades of experience in the legal profession.
A Call to Action: Upholding the Rule of Law
Amidu’s statement serves as a call to action for President Mahama to demonstrate leadership and uphold the rule of law. He urged the President to take decisive action to prevent further violations of citizens’ rights and freedoms.
“Ghana must reset forwards and not backward to yesteryears! That is what the electorate voted for and not media psyops to deflect the enormity of such unlawful acts by government assets and agents,” Amidu concluded.
