Nana Akufo-Addo Honors JB Danquah’s Legacy, Calls for End to Derogatory Remarks
Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has passionately appealed for an end to derogatory remarks and name-calling against the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, a founding father of Ghana. Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Remembrance Service held at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi, Akufo-Addo emphasized Danquah’s pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s democratic foundation.
This event not only celebrated Danquah’s contributions but also served as a reminder of the values he stood for, including the rule of law and political freedom. Akufo-Addo’s speech highlighted the need to preserve these principles as a tribute to Danquah’s enduring legacy.
The Role of JB Danquah in Ghana’s Democracy
Nana Akufo-Addo described JB Danquah as a visionary who tirelessly advocated for the rule of law, which he called the bedrock of Ghana’s political freedom. He stressed that Danquah’s ideals remain central to Ghanaian politics and must never be abandoned.
“The persistent call for the rule of law to be entrenched in our body politic is the ultimate guarantee of liberty and individual freedom. Today, it stands as a central feature of Ghanaian politics, which we must never renounce,” Akufo-Addo stated.
Despite Danquah’s immense contributions, his name continues to be mired in controversy, even decades after his death. Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to honor Danquah’s legacy by upholding democratic values and rejecting divisive rhetoric.
Launch of the 60th Anniversary Compendium
As part of the ceremony, Akufo-Addo launched a Compendium of 60 Commemorative Statements in honor of JB Danquah. This publication aims to document Danquah’s contributions to Ghana’s history and ensure that future generations recognize his role in the nation’s development.
The compendium serves as a historical resource, shedding light on Danquah’s advocacy for independence, his intellectual prowess, and his unwavering commitment to Ghana’s progress. By preserving his legacy in this way, Akufo-Addo hopes to inspire a renewed appreciation for Danquah’s work.
Condemnation of Hate Speech and Political Division
Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking on behalf of the minority caucus in Parliament, condemned recent actions that have tarnished Danquah’s legacy. These include the invasion of a former finance minister’s residence and alleged derogatory comments made against Danquah in Parliament.
Afenyo-Markin called on Ghanaians to rise above political divisions and reject hate speech. He emphasized the importance of national unity and dignity, urging citizens to focus on what unites them rather than what divides them.
“Since the 1940s, no group of people has suffered a smear campaign as enduring as that against Daddy Danquah and his people. These are individuals who have contributed immensely to public service and the betterment of our nation, yet they have been maligned beyond measure for their pure and patriotic sacrifices,” he said.
A Call to Honor Danquah’s Legacy
The Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, also addressed the gathering, cautioning against malice and the deliberate misrepresentation of history. He called for the construction of a monument in Danquah’s name to ensure that his contributions were never forgotten.
“Let us leave here today with a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that democracy is not a gift handed down through history but a perpetual struggle—one we must embrace with courage and resolve,” he said.
The ceremony brought together dignitaries, politicians, and traditional leaders, united in their commitment to honoring Danquah’s enduring impact on Ghana’s political landscape.
Why JB Danquah’s Legacy Matters Today
JB Danquah’s legacy is more relevant than ever as Ghana navigates its democratic journey. His advocacy for the rule of law, individual freedom, and political accountability remains a guiding light for the nation. By honoring his contributions, Ghanaians can draw inspiration to build a more united and prosperous future.
