NPP-Led Coalition Takes to Accra Streets in Protest Over Chief Justice Suspension

In a significant display of political resistance, a coalition of opposition parties led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is staging a major protest today in Ghana’s capital over what they describe as an unconstitutional attack on judicial independence.

Why Ghanaians Are Taking to the Streets Today

The demonstration, taking place Monday, May 5, 2025, has drawn thousands of supporters marching through key streets of Accra in response to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s recent suspension. The NPP and its allied parties claim the suspension represents a “calculated and dangerous interference” in the judiciary by actors affiliated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Justin Kodua Frimpong, NPP General Secretary, “This unprecedented action against the Chief Justice undermines public confidence in our judiciary and violates the clear provisions of our 1992 Constitution. If we fail to resist such overreach now, we risk setting a dangerous precedent for our democracy.”

    Coalition Partners Standing Together

The protest has united several opposition parties under a common cause, including:

    • Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)
    • National Democratic Party (NDP)
    • People’s National Party (PNP)
    • Ghana Union Movement (GUM)

Legal Community’s Response to the Constitutional Crisis

The Ghana Bar Association has taken a firm stance against the Chief Justice’s suspension, officially condemning the action as unconstitutional and demanding its immediate reversal. Their intervention adds significant weight to the opposition’s claims, highlighting concerns across the legal profession.

However, the situation has divided legal experts. Dr. John Osae-Kwapong of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) argues that the matter falls within constitutional boundaries:

“While the opposition’s concerns deserve attention, it’s important to recognize that our constitution provides mechanisms for handling such matters. These processes should be allowed to proceed through the proper legal channels rather than becoming the subject of political demonstrations.”

    Public Reaction and Security Measures

The demonstration has polarized public opinion across Ghana:

    • Supporters view the protest as essential for protecting democratic institutions and judicial independence
    • Critics argue the NPP is politicizing what should remain a constitutional and legal matter
    • Security agencies have implemented comprehensive measures to maintain order and ensure public safety

The Ghana Police Service has assured citizens that traffic management plans are in place to minimize disruption in the capital, while maintaining a visible presence along the demonstration route.
