Tragic Hit-and-Run Incident Raises Road Safety Alarms
The recent hit-and-run accident on the Achimota Highway, which claimed the lives of two former Achimota School students, has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved road safety measures in Ghana. The incident has fueled public outcry, with many calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to curb reckless driving.
NRSA Blames Indiscipline for Rising Road Accidents
Addressing the tragic event, Abraham Amaliba, Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), attributed such accidents to widespread indiscipline and negligence among both drivers and pedestrians. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Amaliba expressed deep concern over the increasing disregard for traffic regulations.
“When I took over the NRSA, I realized there were two main causes of road crashes: driver and pedestrian indiscipline. If we are able to curb these two, we will make a lot of headway,” he stated.

Stricter Enforcement to Combat Road Indiscipline
Amaliba reaffirmed the NRSA’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws to reduce reckless behavior on Ghana’s roads. He emphasized that his administration is determined to take a firm stance against violations.
“We are determined to enforce the laws to deal with the indiscipline on our roads and reduce accidents.”
The NRSA plans to work closely with law enforcement agencies to intensify penalties for offenders. This comes as part of a broader effort to deter reckless driving and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
Nationwide Public Awareness Campaign in the Works
Beyond law enforcement, the NRSA is set to launch a nationwide public awareness campaign aimed at promoting discipline and responsible road use. Amaliba revealed plans to collaborate with key media partners and prominent Ghanaian figures to drive home the importance of road safety.
“Very soon, we will partner with the media and run a promo using a prominent Ghanaian to campaign on discipline,” he assured.
A Call for Collective Action on Road Safety
With road accidents remaining a major public concern, the NRSA’s renewed focus on enforcement and public education is expected to significantly reduce fatalities on Ghana’s roads. However, achieving meaningful change requires collective responsibility—from government agencies, law enforcement, drivers, and pedestrians alike.
