President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the government is in discussions with the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, regarding the re-introduction of the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill. This move aims to ensure the bill is presented as a government-sponsored initiative rather than a private member’s motion, increasing its chances of successful passage.
Government-Sponsored Bill for Stronger Impact
During a fellowship service with the clergy, President Mahama emphasized the importance of reintroducing the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill as a government-led effort. He explained that this approach would provide stronger backing and facilitate smoother legislative processes.
“As a Christian, I uphold the principles and the values that only two genders exist; man and woman. And marriage is between a man and a woman. I have spoken with the Speaker so that a renewal of the expired Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill should be a bill introduced by the government rather than as a private member motion. I hope that consultation will see a renewed Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill,” President Mahama stated.
Reaffirming Opposition to LGBTQ+ Activities
President Mahama reiterated his strong opposition to LGBTQ+ activities, aligning his stance with the bill’s objectives. The Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and promote traditional family values in Ghana.
The bill, which expired in the previous parliamentary session, has been a subject of intense debate. Critics argue that it infringes on human rights, while supporters believe it upholds Ghanaian cultural and religious values.
