Theย Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has strongly condemned the attack onย Citi FMย andย Channel One TVโsย Western Regional correspondent,ย Akwasi Agyei Annim, and his crew by illegal miners. The incident occurred while the journalists were documenting the destruction caused by illegal mining activities in theย Breman-Adomanya forest areaย of theย Wassa Amenfi West Districtย in the Western Region.
Despite the presence of police officers, the miners brazenly assaulted the media team, highlighting the growing audacity of illegal mining operations in the region.
Minister Vows Justice for Attack on Media
Minister Buah has vowed to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, emphasizing that such attacks on journalists will not be tolerated. He stated, โWe are working with the police to make sure that all those involved in the attack on the hardworking Citi FM reporter, Akwasi Agyei Annim, and his team are brought to book and punished. This will serve as a clear example that those who fight to keep us alive will be protected.โ

Illegal Mining: A Threat to Environment and Livelihoods
The illegal miners have reportedly invaded aย 261-acre land, destroying timber trees, cocoa, and rubber farms while polluting the nearbyย River Tano. This devastation not only harms the environment but also threatens the livelihoods of local farmers and communities who depend on these resources.
Minister Buah expressed his frustration, saying, โIf you are a Ghanaian and you look at this level of devastation and do not stand up to fight, then I donโt know what you fight for.โ
Fast-Track Prosecution for Illegal Miners
In response to the growing menace of illegal mining, the Minister revealed thatย Chinese nationalsย and theirย Ghanaian counterpartsย arrested in the Amenfi area are being arraigned. He also disclosed ongoing discussions with theย Chief Justiceย to establishย specialized courtsย to fast-track the prosecution of illegal miners.
โWe have had an engagement with the judiciary and the Chief Justice. We have been given the strongest assurance. We have even proposed dedicated courts to prosecute those who continue this destructive path, ensuring fast-track justice,โ Buah added.
