MP Ernest Yaw Kumi Convicted for Contempt of Court
The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been convicted for contempt by the Koforidua High Court. The court found him guilty of defying an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as a legislator. Following his failure to appear for sentencing, a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
This development has sparked discussions about the rule of law and the responsibilities of public officials. The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has weighed in on the matter, expressing dissatisfaction with the court’s approach while pledging to ensure compliance with the law.
Minority Leader Reacts to the Court’s Decision
Addressing the media, Afenyo-Markin described the court’s directive as “unfair and unsatisfactory.” He revealed that the Minority Caucus is yet to obtain a copy of the court ruling and its accompanying orders, which is necessary before taking an official stance on the matter.
“We’re yet to procure the court ruling and the orders of the court. The lawyers are going to brief the caucus, and we will come out with our position on the matter,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He emphasized that the caucus would take steps to ensure that MP Ernest Yaw Kumi complies with the law. However, he criticized the court’s handling of the case, stating, “We have to say that we are dissatisfied with the approach, and we think that he’s been treated unfairly.”
Ensuring Compliance with the Law
Afenyo-Markin assured the public that the Minority Caucus is committed to upholding the rule of law. “I’m sure all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that our colleague is law-abiding and that the right thing is done,” he said.
The Minority Leader’s comments highlight the delicate balance between addressing legal violations and ensuring fair treatment for all parties involved. The caucus’s decision to await a full briefing from their lawyers before taking a formal position demonstrates a cautious and informed approach to the issue.
