Three Chinese Nationals and Ghanaian Arrested for Illegal Mining and Polluting Pra River
National Security Arrests Suspects for Illegal Mining Near Pra River
In a significant crackdown on illegal mining, National Security operatives have arrested three Chinese nationals and their Ghanaian counterpart near Supom-Dunkwa in the Shama District of the Western Region. The suspects were allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities, locally known asย galamsey, under the guise of sand winning, which has led to the pollution of the Pra River.
The suspects, whose names have been withheld, were handed over to the Western Regional Police Command in Sekondi for further investigation. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and protect Ghanaโs water bodies from environmental degradation.
How the Operation Unfolded
Led by National Security Operative Hashem Tankonu, the team discovered the suspects using gold washing gadgets and platforms on the Pra River. Despite their claims of engaging in sand winning, evidence pointed to illegal mining activities.
โWhen we got there, we collected items suspected to be galamsey equipment. We arrested three Chinese men and their Ghanaian counterparts, who are now being interrogated by the police,โ Tankonu explained.
He added that the team found a machine pumping muddy water back into the river, a clear indication of pollution. Additionally, a galamsey setup was discovered behind the suspectsโ residence, further confirming their involvement in illegal mining.
Environmental Impact of Galamsey
Illegal mining, or galamsey, has devastating effects on Ghanaโs environment, particularly its water bodies. The Pra River, one of the countryโs major rivers, has suffered significant pollution due to these activities. The use of harmful chemicals like mercury and the destruction of riverbanks not only degrade the ecosystem but also threaten the livelihoods of communities relying on the river for water and fishing.
This arrest underscores the urgent need to enforce stricter measures against illegal mining and protect Ghanaโs natural resources for future generations.
Suspects Released on Bail, Chinese Nationals Detained
The Ghanaian suspect has been released on bail after providing a statement to the Western Regional Police Crime Office. However, the three Chinese nationals remain in custody due to a language barrier. Authorities are awaiting an interpreter before proceeding with their bail process.
This case highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in dealing with foreign nationals involved in illegal activities, particularly when language barriers complicate investigations.
