Minority Questions Dr. Johnson Asiamah’s Early Assumption of BoG Governor Role
Minority Challenges Dr. Asiamah’s Authority as BoG Governor
Meta Description:
Ghana’s Minority in Parliament questions Dr. Johnson Asiamah’s assumption of duties as Bank of Ghana Governor, citing constitutional concerns.
Minority Raises Red Flags Over BoG Leadership Transition
The Minority in Parliament has expressed strong reservations over Dr. Johnson Asiamah’s immediate assumption of office as Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
His nomination, announced by President John Dramani Mahama on January 31, 2025, is still pending approval from the Council of State, raising legal and procedural concerns among lawmakers.
Dr. Asiamah’s Appointment: A Quick Turnover
Dr. Asiamah was tapped to replace Dr. Ernest Addison, who officially requested leave ahead of his scheduled retirement on March 31, 2025. Addison, who has led the BoG since April 2017, is stepping down after two full terms.
Despite the Council of State’s absence, Dr. Asiamah has reportedly begun official duties, prompting a strong reaction from the Minority.
Afenyo-Markin Issues Formal Protest
In a letter addressed to President Mahama on February 4, 2025, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called for an immediate halt to Dr. Asiamah’s activities as BoG Governor.
“Dr. Johnson Asiamah should refrain from performing official duties until his nomination is approved by the Council of State. Any premature assumption of office undermines our constitutional processes,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
He further urged the President to intervene and ensure proper adherence to legal procedures.
What’s Next for Dr. Asiamah?
With Ghana’s economic stability at stake, the ongoing debate over Dr. Asiamah’s appointment could have implications for the country’s monetary policy direction.
The question remains: Will the government address these concerns, or will Dr. Asiamah continue in his role without full approval?
