Linda Ocloo Unveils Vision for Greater Accra: Security, Sanitation, and Decentralization Take Center Stage

Newly sworn-in Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo has outlined her ambitious plans to address key challenges in the country’s capital. During her first meeting with the management and staff of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council on February 3, she emphasized security, sanitation, and decentralization as her top priorities.

Sanitation: A Cleaner Accra on the Horizon

One of Ocloo’s flagship initiatives is the reintroduction of Regional Sanitation Day, a move aimed at fostering a cleaner and healthier environment in Accra. She also announced an award scheme for the cleanest city, designed to incentivize municipal and district assemblies to prioritize sanitation.

“Improving sanitation is not just about cleanliness; it’s about creating a healthier and more livable city for all,” Ocloo stated.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader “Resetting Agenda”, which seeks to empower local assemblies to become self-sustaining.

    Empowering Local Governance

Ocloo emphasized the importance of decentralization and participatory governance in her address. She revealed plans to work closely with traditional authorities and religious organizations to ensure inclusive decision-making at the local level.

“I will closely work with traditional authorities, religious organizations, and other stakeholders to deepen decentralization and enhance participatory governance,” she said.

To strengthen local governance, Ocloo also highlighted the need to empower Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Boosting Revenue Generation for Sustainable Development

A key part of Ocloo’s strategy involves improving revenue generation at the district level. She stressed that empowering MMDCEs and districts to generate their revenue is critical for sustainable development.

“MMDCEs and districts will be empowered to improve revenue generation to ensure sustainable development at the local level,” she explained.

Additionally, she pledged to strengthen Zonal and Area Councils to provide technical support and oversight to MMDAs, as mandated by the Local Governance Act 936.

    Why This Matters for Accra

Accra, as Ghana’s capital, faces significant challenges in sanitation, security, and governance. Ocloo’s focus on these areas signals a proactive approach to tackling these issues head-on. Her emphasis on collaboration with traditional and religious leaders also highlights a commitment to inclusive and community-driven solutions.

    What’s Next for Greater Accra?

With these plans in motion, residents of Accra can look forward to:

    • A cleaner city through the reintroduction of Regional Sanitation Day.
    • Stronger local governance and community participation.
    • Improved revenue generation for sustainable development.
