Kidney specialists and surgeons in the Ashanti Region have completed the region’s first-ever kidney transplant, a groundbreaking achievement in medical care that offers a fresh chance at life for those battling kidney disease.
This historic procedure was a collaborative effort between the Kidney Specialist Center and HopeXchange Medical Centre in Kumasi. It involved a patient in his mid-forties who had been battling kidney disease for over five years. After spending a year on dialysis, the patient chose to undergo a kidney transplant, following consultations with expert doctors at the center.
Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor Leads Historic Kidney Transplant Surgery
Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, a renowned consultant nephrologist and the lead surgeon for the transplant, expressed his excitement about the success of the surgery. He emphasized that the procedure represents a huge step forward in kidney care in the region. According to Dr. Tannor, the cost of the first kidney transplant was around $25,000, with future transplants expected to range between $30,000 and $35,000.
The doctor assured kidney patients in the region that the medical team is committed to performing more of these life-saving procedures. “This is something we are hoping will continue, and it has come to stay here in Kumasi,” Dr. Tannor shared with optimism.
