Muntaka Clarifies: President Mahama Holds Final Say on Security Heads, Including IGP Appointment
Muntaka’s Clarification on the Role of the Interior Minister
Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister-Designate for the Interior, has clarified that the authority to retain or remove heads of Ghana’s security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police (IGP), lies solely with President John Dramani Mahama.
The Interior Minister’s Limited Role in Security Appointments
During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 24, 2025, Muntaka emphasized that while he, as Interior Minister, can make recommendations, the ultimate decision rests with the President. His remarks came in response to a question from Ranking Member, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, regarding the potential fate of IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare under the new administration.
Muntaka’s Assurance: Recommendations to the President Only
Muntaka made it clear that he does not have the power to unilaterally decide on the retention of security heads, underscoring that such decisions are the exclusive prerogative of the President. He assured that assessments of the security team would be conducted in line with President Mahama’s vision for national security and governance.
“I can only make recommendations to the President. It is his prerogative to assess and decide who stays or goes based on the national interest,” Muntaka said, reiterating that those who fail to align with the President’s objectives will be dealt with accordingly.
Public Debate Surrounding IGP Dampare’s Future
The question of whether IGP Dampare will remain in his role has sparked public debate. Some groups have called for his removal, citing concerns about alignment with the new administration’s security priorities, while others commend his leadership in maintaining law and order during turbulent times.
As the public waits to see the outcome, Muntaka’s clarification has added a layer of transparency to the ongoing discussions around leadership in Ghana’s security services
