WAPCo Reschedules Offshore Pipeline Cleaning and Inspection Exercise
The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has revised the timeline for its offshore pipeline cleaning and inspection exercise, commonly referred to as “pigging.” Initially slated for January 20, 2025, the exercise will now begin on February 3, 2025, to better align with the needs of key stakeholders.
Details of the Offshore Pigging Exercise
The four-week operation will involve:
- Temporary Suspension of Reverse Gas Flow: Gas flow from Ghanaโs Western Region to Tema will be halted.
- Shutdown of Facilities: Key facilities in Tema (Ghana), Lomรฉ (Togo), and Cotonou (Benin) will be temporarily offline.
- Subsea Valve Replacement: Subsea valves at strategic locations will be replaced to enhance safety and efficiency.
Importance of the Pigging Exercise
This comprehensive cleaning and inspection aligns with global best practices and is a regulatory requirement to ensure the safety and reliability of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). The pipeline spans from Itoki in Ogun State, Nigeria, to Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region.
Two Phases of the Cleaning Project
- Phase One: Completed in December 2024, it focused on the onshore section of the pipeline in Nigeria.
- Phase Two: Scheduled from February 3 to March 2, 2025, this phase will cover the offshore section, stretching from Badagry, Lagos State, Nigeria, to Takoradi, Ghana.
Commitment to Operational Integrity
WAPCo conducts these inspections every five years to uphold the structural integrity of the WAGP and ensure its safe, efficient operation across the region. This proactive approach underscores WAPCoโs dedication to reliable energy delivery and regional development.
