Mahama Reaffirms Commitment to Solving Ghana’s Energy Crisis and Preventing Dumsor Resurgence
President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s ongoing energy challenges and preventing the return of the intermittent power outages commonly referred to as Dumsor. Speaking at the National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana on Thursday, January 9, Mahama acknowledged the pressing issues within the energy sector while assuring Ghanaians that his administration is taking proactive steps to stabilize the situation.
Tackling Ghana’s Energy Crisis: Mahama’s Assurances to Citizens
With the energy sector facing challenges such as fuel shortages for thermal plants and delayed maintenance of the West African Gas Pipeline, President Mahama reassured the public that his government is dedicated to ensuring a steady and reliable electricity supply. He called on Ghanaians to remain hopeful, emphasizing that comprehensive measures are being put in place to prevent any further power shortages that could affect the nationโs day-to-day life.
โWe are assuming office at a critical time in our nationโs history,โ Mahama said. โGhana is facing significant challenges, but this is exactly why you elected us. We will be transparent about these challenges and take full responsibility for solving them.โ
West African Gas Pipeline Maintenance Postponed to Prevent Power Crisis
In a key development, the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) announced on January 9 that it would postpone its scheduled pipeline maintenance by two weeks. This delay helps avert a potential power crisis in Ghana. The decision followed intense negotiations led by a technical committee established by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who spearheaded efforts to resolve the looming energy shortage.
The original maintenance was set to begin this week and was flagged by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) as a major threat to the countryโs electricity supply. GRIDCo had raised concerns about the combination of fuel shortages for thermal plants and the anticipated disruption in the gas supply from the pipeline, which could severely impact the country’s power generation capacity.
Ensuring Reliable Electricity Supply for Ghanaians
Despite the challenges, President Mahama remains confident that his administration will successfully address these issues and ensure that Ghanaians continue to have access to reliable electricity. โThere is a threat of power outages, but my brothers and sisters, donโt despair. You elected us to solve these problems, not to blame anyone else. I can assure you that we will make sure your lights stay on,โ Mahama assured the audience.
This commitment reflects President Mahamaโs proactive approach to the energy sector and his focus on making informed decisions that directly benefit the Ghanaian people. As the nation navigates these critical challenges, Mahamaโs leadership continues to inspire confidence in the administrationโs ability to secure a brighter, more stable energy future for Ghana.
