The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has assured the public of a consistent electricity supply following successful negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) over unpaid arrears.
This update comes in the wake of threats from IPPs to shut down multiple power plants due to outstanding payments, raising fears of widespread power outages, commonly known as “dumsor.” The planned shutdown prompted concerns about a potential energy crisis.
ECGโs External Communications Manager, Nii Ayiku, addressed the media, confirming that discussions with IPPs had mitigated the immediate risk. A temporary agreement was reached, with the government addressing part of the arrears and proposing a payment schedule for the remaining balance. This resolution is expected to stabilize electricity generation and alleviate tensions in the energy sector.
No power out
โWe are fully engaged with the IPPs to ensure that the power supply issues experienced over the weekend are resolved,โ Ayiku stated. He emphasized ECGโs commitment to maintaining uninterrupted electricity while continuing to work collaboratively with IPPs to address concerns.
Despite this progress, stakeholders are calling for long-term solutions to ensure financial sustainability in Ghanaโs energy sector. Such measures are crucial to prevent future disputes and maintain a consistent power supply across the country.
