2024 Election: As Ghana gears up for its general elections, the political atmosphere is charged with allegations of mismanagement, economic hardship, and public outcry over persistent challenges. Among the most pressing issues is the return of “Dumsor” (erratic power outages), which critics attribute to the government’s failure to settle debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs). Despite Ghana’s capacity to generate sufficient electricity, some power plants have shut down due to non-payment, forcing the country to import electricity from Ivory Coast. This situation undermines the government’s claims of maintaining a stable power supply.

Adding to the controversy is the Free SHS program, hailed as a flagship policy of the Akufo-Addo administration. Reports of expired, weevil-infested rice allegedly being distributed to Free SHS students have sparked public outrage. Critics argue that the program is being reduced to a political tool rather than a transformative education initiative. The allegations have cast doubt on the government’s commitment to delivering quality education and safeguarding student welfare.

2024 Election: Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, once celebrated for his economic acumen, faces criticism for his role in introducing the E-Levy and other taxes deemed burdensome by citizens. Allegations of supporting illegal mining (“galamsey”) activities, compounded by the appointment of a controversial spokesperson on mining, have further tarnished his image. Public trust has also been eroded by the perceived failure of the NaBCo initiative, which was launched to address youth unemployment but has left many beneficiaries feeling abandoned.

The opposition, led by former President John Dramani Mahama, has seized the moment to question the government’s credibility, highlighting widespread corruption and governance failures. They argue that the administration has prioritized political survival over addressing the pressing needs of ordinary Ghanaians.

2024 Election: With economic hardships mounting and trust in leadership waning, these issues have become pivotal in shaping voter sentiment. As Election Day approaches, calls for accountability, transparency, and a focus on citizens’ welfare are at the forefront of national discourse. This election could be a defining moment, reflecting the public’s desire for change or continuity amidst these challenges.
